Improved Cookstoves (ICS) for Forest Conservation to Enhance Housewives’ Health and Protect Forests from Overcutting
Location: Kassala and Gedaref States, Sudan.
Description: A direct intervention to address deforestation for fuelwood, a primary cause of land degradation in eastern Sudan. We distribute and train communities on using energy-efficient stoves.
Activities:
Reducing Pressure on Forests: The stoves operate with >50% improved efficiency compared to traditional three-stone fires, drastically reducing the amount of wood harvested.
Protecting Vegetation Cover: By conserving scarce forest resources, the project directly safeguards existing vegetation cover, a critical barrier against desertification.
Climate Change Co-benefits: The project reduces greenhouse gas emissions and black carbon.
